The shrub, Abelia, can be quite under-used in the garden, yet it is one that can give endless interest, colour and scent. A semi-evergreen plant with strong, arching branches that gives valuable autumn interest thanks to its clusters of fragrant flowers. Performing well in dry, sunny conditions, Abelia is perfect for a warm, sunny border in your garden. The glossy foliage can be clipped into a neat hedge, staying in leaf for most of the year. Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple) is a highly popular tree and it's easy to see why. This slow-growing tree can be planted in any garden soil and makes a wonderful feature in your garden, whilst still being low maintenance.
