Colombard/Sauvignon, Villa Dria, IGP Cotes de Gascogne Stockists

From Gascony, in south west France, comes this fresh dry white from the relatively new estate of Jean-Pierre Drieux who only began farming 60 hectares of vines 20 years ago. He is more than keen on working in a sustainable way ; " The utilisation of organic fertilizers and plant extracts, and the use of geo-biology for the harmonisation of the energy of each plot, have enabled me to stimulate the natural defenses of the vines and to boost microbial activity in the soil. I have been able to greatly reduce the amount of conventional chemicals employed and thus preserve the biodiversity of my land and enhance its expression." We approve of his efforts but also very much approve of the remarkable freshness allied to layers of flavour that he crams into his wines.

Riesling, Grace Lane Yakima Valley, Washington

Grace Lane comprises twelve estate vineyards in Washington covering nearly 2,000 acres in the Yakima Valley for Rieslng and the Columbia Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon. The Yakima Valley is the oldest and most diverse region of the state where grapes are exposed to long, sunny days and brisk, cool evenings. This extreme fluctuation in temperature results in great ripeness while retaining bright acidity. The Columbia Valley is the largest wine growing region of Washington, where the northerly latitude provides two hours more sunlight per day than in California. This develops fruit intensity, while cool evenings and nights again promote higher acidities. Well-drained sandy soils have low fertility and low water-holding capacity, allowing precise control of vine growth patterns.

Coteaux du Layon, Domaine de la Bergerie

This is but 'simple' Coteaux du Layon but in this wonderful vintage Yves Guégnard has transformed the Chenin Blanc grapes, from his Domaine de la Bergerie estate, into the epitome of all that is great about the sweet wines of the Loire valley. Generous amounts of sunshine meant the the grapes entered the autumn in in a perfect, ripe condition. The mellow end to the season saw mists rising from the Layon river and encouraging the onset of the 'noble rot' so necessary in the creation of great sweet wines. Intense sweetness balanced by fresh fruit acidity is the result. Quite irresistible.

DV by Doisy Vedrines, Sauternes

Château Doisy-Védrines, the largest of the Doisy estates and a 2éme Cru Classé Barsac property and has been owned by the Castéja family since 1946. Doisy-Védrines's 27 hectares of vineyards are situated on the highest plateau in Barsac. The crop is handpicked by successive selections ('tris') as the workers pass through the vines, selecting only 'botrytised grapes'. This is done three times. The wine ferments in barrels slowly untill beginning of December and rests for a further year before being bottled. The finest barrels are reserved for the first wine but about 40% of production goes into the 'second' wine DV. Thanks to the botrytis, this wine has developed aromas of exotic fruits, quinces and oranges. It has a deliciously smooth finish.

Chardonnay, Sunnycliff, Victoria

Sunnycliff wines are made by the Wingara Wine Group from their estate at Red Cliffs, near Mildura in the Murray Valley of North West Victoria. Here they have 350 hectares (865 acres) of vines growing a wide variety of grape varieties, both red and white. The climate in this inland part of Australia is reliably warm while the great Murray River which flows down from the Australian Alps brings life to the region. Harvested from estate vineyards. Several yeast strains were used to ferment different parcels which contributed to a variety of fruit and savoury nuances. One parcel underwent malolatic fermentation which contributes some subtle malty flavours on the palate.

Viognier Grenache Blanc, Domaine de la Pinede, IGP Pays d'Oc

Sommières is not an immediately recognisable wine region but if you think of it as half way between the towns of Montpellier and Nimes in the south of France you know that you are in long-established vineyard country. In the centre of the old medieval town are the cellars of the cooperative that makes this wine. Their vineyards cover 700 hectares around the townships of Sommières itself, Salinelles, Aspères, ampagne, Garrigues, Lecques and Fontanes and they pride themselves on their sustainable approach to viticulture. This is a editerranean climate with an average annual temperature of 14.5 degress (lucky them!). No problem to grow grapes but careful timing of the harvest ensures a natural freshness in the whites.
