Restrained and thoughtfully created with the fine balance typical of Corey Hall's wines. In the glass this builds to show itself as a complex, virtuoso wine that has been recognised as one of New Zealand's best. Tasting note: Passionfruit and gooseberry surrounded by guava and lemon flavours that run smoothly through the palate hemmed by a subtle mineral tone and soft acids. The name Gem is symbolic of our approach - picking from the best regions & vineyard sites says the winemaker Corey but, it is also his wife's, Meg, name backwards. The name is something Corey thought of while brainstorming (or surfing - depending on who you ask!) Corey and Megan Hall are passionate about producing singe vineyard, handcrafted wines. They are involved at every stage from the selection of vineyard sites through to the winemaking and tasting of their wines with others. Gem wines are about moments in time when you...

Concentrated cassis, black cherries and some herbaceousness on the nose and palate. A cold, wet Winter in 2009 allowed for the lovely, even budding of the vineyards during Spring, and the warm, sunny days that followed in Summer resulted in great flavour and colour development in the berries. Full fruit flavours and soft tannins, together with good aromatics and ideal acidity, made 2010 an excellent vintage.
Flavours of red cherry and anise, with a hint of vanilla, abound in this Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is well balanced, with medium tannin, a smooth mid-palate and a spicy, coffee finish. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petite Verdot. This Cabernet comes from specially selected vineyards in California, where warm days, cool nights and a long growing season develop ripe, round fruit flavours. Each vineyard is sustainably farmed and harvested separately, fermented in upright fermenters, and rack and return was performed twice daily. Rack and return is the process of draining all of the free-run juice off the cap, then pumping the free-run juice back over the top of the fermenter. This method increases colour and tannin extraction and improves the mouthfeel through the integration of oxygen. Each blend was aged separately in neutral oak. The Hayes family was a true California ranching family...
