In 1945, at the end of World War II, Herbert von Karajan had found himself unable to earn a living. It looked as if would be at least two years before the four-power Allied authorities would agree to his 'de-nazification'. Suddenly there arrived in Vienna an Englishman called Walter Legge. Legge was the head of English Columbia, sister-label to HMV at EMI. Karajan could not yet perform in public, but, there was nothing to prevent him from making recordings in Vienna for a private company. It was the break-through Karajan needed. For Legge and EMI it was a terrific artistic coup. Thus began a remarkable series of recordings. About the Artist CD 1 Beethoven: Symphony No.1 in C, Op.21 1.1st.mvt.
