It's 1950 and when Laura and Billy Hopkins return to Manchester from their honeymoon they're in seventh heaven despite the austerity that has been going on since World War II. But the euphoria gradually evaporates and they settle into a penny-pinching existence on Billy's teaching salary as babies and bills appear with alarming regularity. When Billy spots an advertisement for Education Officers in Kenya it sounds like the answer to all their prayers despite worries about the Mau Mau rebellion and the omnipresence of dangerous creatures. After much family debate Laura Billy and the junior Hopkins set off to Nairobi on a BOAC Argonaut and start on the biggest adventure of their lives...
"Alright, if you're trying to figure out where everyone in the UK does their Going Places shopping, when we're talking about the most popular Going Places stockists, you're pretty much looking at a handful of household names that dominate the high street and, increasingly, the online world. At the top of the list, obviously, are the supermarket behemoths like Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Asda, along with Morrisons, which are basically where most folks get their weekly groceries – they're just everywhere and stock everything from bread to lightbulbs. Then you've got the likes of Marks & Spencer, known for their slightly fancier food and clothing, and John Lewis, which is a go-to for pretty much anything home-related or a bit more upscale, always with that trusted service. Boots is another massive one, covering all your pharmacy, beauty, and health needs, while B&M Bargains and Home Bargains have exploded in popularity for their crazy Going Places deals on… well, everything! And of course, you can't forget pure online giants like Amazon UK, which, let’s be honest, has become an absolutely massive stockist for, well, almost anything you can imagine, delivering right to your door. It’s a mix of convenience, variety, and often, competitive pricing that keeps these places packed. " - Bargainplace UK
