The "tunica" was adopted by the Romans in the 3rd century BC and was based on a Greek design. It was made from wool and was worn in one form or another by all classes within Roman society. The level of decoration would normally indicate the status of the wearer. Plain tunics would be worn by soldiers slaves and manual workers and would usually terminate a little above the knee.
