Two Women aka La Ciociara (Blu-ray) (BLU-RAY) Stockists

CultFilms presents for the first time on Blu-ray, this neo-realist classic which won Sophia Loren a 'Best Actress' Oscar ® in a non-English-speaking film - the first actress ever to win an Oscar for a foreign-language performance.TWO WOMEN also got Loren a 'Best Actress' in Cannes and another twenty international awards for this film alone and many more accolades to its director, Vittorio De Sica (BICYCLE THIEVES, UMBERTO D, YESTERDAY TODAY AND TOMORROW), including a Golden Globe for Best foreign film. Presented for the first time ever in pristine HD, sourced from a restored negative, TWO WOMEN at long last, finally gets the release it deserves on CultFilms, doing justice to this masterpiece of world-cinema. With both the Italian version with improved (switchable) English subtitles as well as the English-spoken audio track, dubbed by Sophia Loren herself. No other worldwide release has these two options. Written by Neorealist embodiment, Cesare Zavattini (UMBERTO D, YESTERDAY TODAY AND TOMORROW), and adapted from the eponymous novel by Alberto Moravia, TWO WOMEN tells the story of a young and beautiful widowed shop keeper Cesira (Sophia Loren), a woman of simple rural origin and her young twelve year old daughter, Rosetta (Eleonora Brown), as they struggle to survive in war-ravaged Italy. To escape the bombings in Rome, the 'two women' flee south to the village where Cesira was born, her native Ciociaria, a hilly agricultural province of central Italy. The two sympathise with a young left wing intellectual named Michele (Jean-Paul Belmondo), who soon declares his feelings for the beautiful widow before being taken prisoner by retreating German soldiers. As the allies advance and the Germans end their occupation, Cesira and Rosetta decide to return home. But although Cesira had hoped to keep her daughter from the horrors of war by escaping Rome, it is only at the very end of their journey that they finally encounter the devastating truth and tragedy that war means - at the very hand of the country's liberators. Review `Loren deservedly won a Best Actress Oscar - the first to a non-American actress in a foreign-language film - for this Vittorio De Sica film... a remarkably moving, humane vision of individual struggle in an inhumane world. Loren is a marvel to behold.` --Variety Running Time: 106 minutes Region: Region B/2 (Read more about DVD/Blu-ray formats.) Subtitles: English Release Date: 24 Oct. 2016
