Vestmannaeyjar - Pompeii of the North - Full Details A transfer bus (non-guided) takes you to the pier at Bakkafjara on the south coast (about a one hour drive) and from there the ferry (non-guided transfer) takes another 30 minutes to reach the islands of which the youngest celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2003 and the oldest is close to 40,000 years old! Once there you will be greeted by a local guide and join a bus tour around Heimaey island. You will visit the puffins in Storhofdi and walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted only a few years ago as well as exploring the flora of the new lava field.
