Weston-Super-Mare: The History Of Somerset'S Seaside Gem (DVD) Stockists

Do you have happy memories of a trip to the seaside at Weston-super-Mare? Did you arrive by paddlesteamer from Wales, or look forward to that essential ride on a donkey? Then this presentation, filmed during the best summer in living memory, is for you. Weston's story begins with the earliest settlers who built Worlebury Hillfort two thousand years ago. Find out about the 18th century plant hunters, geologists and antiquarians who discovered rare specimens on the undisturbed beaches. The first tourists came in Georgian times, 'roughing it' in local cottages while gradually the features of a resort were built - piers, hotels, shops and theatres. By 1900 Weston was a thriving resort welcoming thousands of holidaymakers throughout the summer months. Discover local characters and stories of the people who built the town, including extended features on Birnbeck Pier and the Grand Pier, illustrated by remarkable photographs and memorabilia. Previously unreleased archive film from 1935 shows the naming of a new motor lifeboat by the Duke of Kent and there is also a fascinating glimpse of holidaymakers at leisure in the inter-war period. Weston suffered badly during the Second World War. Hear about the blitzes, the stories of evacuees and GI's. What were the secret weapons being developed on Birnbeck Pier? An excerpt of colour archive film shows Weston in all its glory during the 1950s and 1960s, as the great British seaside holiday enjoyed a revival. Researched and presented by local historian and author Sharon Poole, this is a real treat for anyone with an interest in Weston-super-Mare. Running Time: 75.00 minutes Region: Region 2 (This DVD may not be viewable outside Europe. Read more about DVD formats.)

"Right, if you're trying to figure out where everyone in the UK actually shops, it's a pretty varied bunch, but some names just pop up everywhere and are total household legends! Obviously, the big supermarket players like Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, and Morrisons are absolute giants, probably a no-brainer as they're not just for your weekly groceries anymore; they stock everything from clothes to electronics these days. Then you've got the online behemoth, Amazon UK, which just dominates for pretty much anything you can think of, often with super-fast delivery – it’s practically a national habit now for impulse buys and planned purchases alike. For more fashion-focused bits, ASOS is absolutely massive, especially with younger crowds, and even eBay UK still pulls in loads of shoppers looking for Weston-Super-Mare: The History Of Somerset'S Seaside Gem (DVD) deals or unique pre-loved treasures. On the high street, you can't ignore stalwarts like Boots and Superdrug for all your health and beauty essentials, or the always-bustling Primark for unbelievably cheap fashion that flies off the shelves. Then there's John Lewis, often seen as a bit more premium, but super popular for homeware and electronics, and Next is a massive go-to for fashion and things for the home too. Don't forget Argos, that catalogue shop where you pick up your stuff, still going strong, and Currys PC World for all things techy. Basically, the UK retail scene is a mix of those massive supermarkets, online giants, and some really strong high street names that have managed to adapt and stay relevant! " - Bargainplace UK
